Legal Justice
Fighting for Immigrant Justice
After students have completed SCIJ’s intensive immigration law and community organizing training program, they’re mobilized to provide representation to asylum seekers by pairing students up with SCIJ’s partner attorneys and immigration organizations. Students support attorneys by working on all aspects of an asylum case, including meeting with clients, collecting evidence, and drafting legal documents. During this process, SCIJ supports students through case rounds, feedback, and workshops. Learn more below.
Building on an Ecosystem
SCIJ is building on the ecosystem of immigration justice practitioners by partnering with attorneys leading the fight for immigrant justice.
Trained students are paired with experienced immigration attorneys working on asylum cases and support them by taking on all aspects of an asylum case with SCIJ mentoring students throughout the process. Partner attorneys review the case during key checkpoints and are the attorneys of record, similarly to working with a paralegal. Learn more by clicking here.

Ensuring Ongoing Support
In addition to providing pro bono representation to asylum seekers, SCIJ also provides wrap-around services to clients and general support for the local immigration community. As of April 2021, SCIJ has helped over 20 immigrants with general immigration questions and those in need of other social services such as housing, food assistance, and health care.
General Immigration Assistance
SCIJ provides pro se assistance with immigration matters such as change of address, change of venue, renewal of work permits, and other small items in order to ensure small things don’t become big problems. For issues SCIJ can’t help with, we make referrals to other organizations.
Wrap-Around Services
SCIJ provides basic screening and referrals for social services and programs to ensure immigrants are empowered with the resources to take control of their own lives. This includes housing and food assistance, health care, job support, and other potential needs SCIJ identifies.
